Question
The holidays are fast approaching and my partner and I are in need of some fun holiday gift ideas for our kids, ages 6 and 9. We are looking for something our children can play with on their own or together—but without needing too much supervision. Last year, they got a Lego set, which they loved and spent hours playing. This year, the kids asked for a drone, but I’m not sure that is appropriate for younger kids or something they can play independently. We are looking for any and all ideas—can you help us?
Answer
Wow! I cannot believe we are already entering the holiday season. I’m sure many parents are asking this question, so you are not alone in wanting to pick the perfect gift for your children. Here are some ideas for gifts that are creative, educational, and fun – and that we are sure your children will enjoy!
- Snap Circuits. Snap Circuit Kids have entertained my nanny children for hours and hours. And my mother played with a kit once and ended up buying three for her second-grade classroom. They are wonderful because children can build so many different things with them, and there are a number of kits to choose from. Select one your kids will enjoy and that’s right for your budget! Children ages 8 and over.
- Lego Creator 3-in-1 Set. I know Lego was the hit of last year, but it might be great to get a new Creator 3-in-1 sets! The lovely thing about these sets is that your kids can go back and forth between the three designs to build them over and over again! They are also great for children of different ages.
- Magna-Tiles. You might already have some, but Magna-Tiles are really wonderful for building and creating as well. If you already have some, there are lots of add on kits you can get to give your old Magna-Tiles a new and exciting refresh. Great for children ages 3 and older.
- Marble Run. Marble Run is a fun activity that can keep children engages for hours and hours. There are different sets to choose from, and it’s good for children 4 and older.
- Little Passports. A little different than the Legos and Magna-Titles, Little Passports is a subscription service that gives children a monthly gift in the mail over the course of a year. There are different kits for children of different ages that cover the world, science and technology, and culture—including Early Explorers and Science Expedition.
- Makeblock DIY Robot Kits. If your children seem interested in science and technology, these DIY Robot Kits might be the perfect gift. Great for children as young as 8 and the older ones as well!
- Racing Drone Set. If you decide to get your children a drone like, here is one that is designed for kids and might be a good fit. It has an obstacle course that they can fly through and runs on AA batteries. Great for children 8 and older.
Gifts can be difficult to figure out, but these suggestions should give your child hours of fun. They also have a component of learning and experimentation, which is great for supporting your children’s development. We hope these ideas help, and feel free to share your own with us as well! Happy holidays, and of course, reach out if you have any additional questions!
